About the Journal
Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies, published twice a year with the aim of contributing scholarly works on the Alevi-Bektashi belief system to the academic literature, is issued by the Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Institute, a non-profit civil society organization. In this context, Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies aims to share with the public academic works such as articles, reviews, translations, and book critiques conducted on Alevi-Bektashi communities, utilizing scientific methods without restrictions on discipline or field.
Focus and Scope
In line with these objectives, Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies focuses on studies that explore the history, belief system, literature, practices, and current state of the Alevi-Bektashi belief system and culture, identify existing issues, and offer solutions. Original research articles, review articles, translations, and book reviews that present new data on the Alevi-Bektashi belief system through humanistic, normative, and scientific research methods and approaches are within the scope of the journal.
The following works are outside the journal's scope:
- Papers presented and published as oral presentations are not accepted for publication.
- Papers presented and published as poster presentations are not accepted for publication.
- Works previously published in print as articles, book chapters, or forewords are not published according to the journal's publication policy.
The types of manuscripts accepted for publication are original research articles, review articles, translation articles, and book reviews. (See the "Article Types" section for details.)
Publication Frequency
Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies, an international peer-reviewed journal, is published biannually in June and December. Special issues may be published with the decision of the Editorial Board. Special issues are announced at least one year before publication.
Publication Language
Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies, which began publication in 2009, has since been published in Turkish, English, and German. Each article is published with abstracts in the two other languages. The journal provides support for German abstracts of articles written in Turkish and English. Submitted works must comply with the grammatical rules and scientific language standards of the chosen publication language (Turkish, English, or German), and maintain a clear, concise, and accessible language quality.

Archiving
The Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies was available both in print and online up until June 2025. Printed copies were regularly distributed by mail to libraries, researchers working on related subjects, and individuals or institutions identified by the Editorial Board. This distribution list was updated regularly based on incoming requests. Printed and online distributions were conducted simultaneously, with 50 copies of each issue archived at the Alevi-Bektashi Research Institute. However, due to changing circumstances, it has been decided that starting from June 2025, the journal will be available exclusively online. All issues of the journal are openly accessible to the public via the journal's website at www.abked.de.
Abstracting and Indexing
To enhance the visibility of the works, the journal is indexed in the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIHPLUS), the Information Matrix for the Analysis of Journals (MIAR), the Modern Language Association (MLA), idealonline, Index Islamicus, and the Index Copernicus International (ICI) databases.
Financial Statement
Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies adheres to an open access policy, meaning no subscription or fee is required from readers or libraries to access published electronic articles. Since the journal does not charge authors processing fees or readers subscription fees, it has no source of revenue. All expenses are covered by the Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Institute.
Sponsorship and Advertising
Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies does not accept print advertising sponsorships as part of its publication policies. As stated under the "Financial Statement" section, all expenses of the journal are covered by the Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Institute.
Collaboration and Partnerships
Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies currently has no partnerships or collaborations. Under publishing ethics, any future partnerships or collaborations will be announced transparently.
Open Access Statement and Copyright
The Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies is published online twice a year. To facilitate easy access, the journal has adopted an open access policy. Open access enhances the global exchange of scientific knowledge and provides beneficial outcomes through free online access to research for humanity. The Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies supports the Budapest Open Access Initiative, adopted on September 12, 2012. The open access policies approved by the Editorial Board can be accessed at http://www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org/boai-10-translations/turkish-translation.
All works published in the Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies are licensed under the "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License". Under this license, all published works, datasets, graphics, and appendices may be reproduced, distributed, and shared in search engines, websites, weblogs, and all other media, provided the Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies is appropriately cited.
Since its establishment in 2009, the Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies has been published in Turkish, English, and German. The first 12 issues included abstracts in German, English, Turkish, and Albanian, along with German translations of the articles. Starting from the 13th issue, each article is published in one of the three publication languages with abstracts provided in the other two languages. The journal's German language editor provides assistance with German abstracts for articles written in Turkish and English, free of charge.
In line with recommendations from referees or field editors, the Journal of Alevism-Bektashism Studies regards accurate and complete citation and referencing of accepted studies as mandatory within the scope of publication ethics. Accordingly, each study undergoes a bibliography, citation, and referencing check after acceptance.
After the evaluation process, articles that meet the conditions for publication undergo a sequential process including plagiarism checking, bibliography formatting, citation and reference checking, layout and typesetting, and DOI assignment.
The relationship between editors and the publisher is based on the principle of editorial independence. The Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Institute is not involved in any stage of the publication process. The responsibility of the Institute is limited to monitoring financial processes. Works are shared with readers through cooperation between editors and the Editorial Board. According to the written agreement between the editors and the Alevi-Bektashi Cultural Institute, all editorial decisions are independent of the publisher and the journal owner.
